The winner of The Carl Doty Art Scholarship 2017 is Kathryn Chisholm of Digby Regional High School. Her visual art teacher is Darcie Doucette.
Kathryn is going to St. Thomas University to study Fine Arts, History and Languages.

May 17, 2016 Alma Square given a new look
This was a milestone toward the Red Carpet event of the 10th Anniversary Gala. We had cooperation from the weather and fantastic participation in the painting of the floor mural. Special thanks to the measuring tape, masking tape, and painting team: Suzanne Babin-Muise, Shari Surette, Brian Porter, the three guys who just showed up – Mark Davis, J0b Fiander and Joe Falls, and Councillor Sandy Dennis. Thanks also to Carole Bojarski and Angela Collier for moral support, coffee and lunch.

The Alma Square Floor Mural was conceived as an extension of the Paths We Share exhibit opening at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia on May 28th, 2016.
One of the paths we all share in life is patterns of biology which often, surprisingly, are also mathematically describable.
One of these sequences of life forms was discovered by the mathematician, Leonardo of Piza, also known as Fibonacci. This simple sequence of 1.1.2.3.5.8… where the last two numbers are added to get the next is amazing descriptive of life form sequences such as the spirals of sunflower seeds and shells.
Artistically these sequences produce a unit called the “golden mean” which often shows up in painting composition and in the proportions of great architecture.
Our concept for Alma Square is that we will lay down one of the most basic paths we share patterns and that, over time, others will add to and elaborate on this pattern of life in an evolutionary manner.
You will note that there is a counter pattern that has not been painted. While life has structure it also has variation. This is not a static design but an opportunity for the community to express itself and its vision of the future of life images.
If that is a bit heavy, just enjoy the patterns.
November 19, 2015 – Maudified House History
The Friends of AGNS, 1n 2014, under the direction of Wendy Jones, sponsored the Modified House Project as a community celebration of Maud Lewis and as a fund raiser for the AGNS programs we support. The houses were exhibited about the town during the summer and auctioned off at a gala in the fall. Below are the houses, each painted by a different local artist. The houses were supplied by sponsoring local businesses.

March 15, 2015 – O Light a Candle shown
O LIGHT A CANDLE: This new documentary was viewed the AGNS Western Branch, Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. It was created by Canadian journalist and filmmaker Maziar Bahari, who, after spending 118 days in an Iranian prison without charges, was inspired by the resilience of the Baha’i community in the face of unrelenting persecution, to produce the film, which is also part of a global campaign titled, “Education is Not a Crime.”
February 22, 2015 – Art of Plating – Encore!
The February 22nd event, Sebastien and Hannah Milot (Sebastien’s Gourmet & Catering www.sebastiensgourmet.ca) was sold out. Organizers are whipping up a second food-lover’s special program at the AGNS Western Branch on Sunday, March 29th at 2 p.m.
They’ll show us all about the art of plating and tantalize our taste buds with samplers. Imagine eating a Caprese skewer, a Jerked Shrimp with Coconut Mango Sauce, Bourbon Meatball, and a Puffed Pastry Wafer with a Creamy mixture of Pistachio & Goat Cheese and Chive piped in the center.
The second offering will include: Limoncello Mousse in a Flaky Phyllo cup, garnished with a Fresh Raspberry, Candied Lemon Zest and a Mint Leaf on Raspberry Coulis Paint. It will also include a Chocolate Espresso Brownie cup with their Decadent Chocolate Mousse piped into it, topped with a fresh Strawberry slice, atop a bed of Crème Fraiche, Chocolate Cookie Crumbs and Chocolate Drizzle.
Sebastien says, “We will demonstrate the preparation of each of these while also discussing our process in choosing menu items and developing the recipes and presentation of each item.”

January 25, 2015 – Adaptive Reuse Restoration
Creative Minds Series presents session on Adaptive Reuse Restoration
The Friends of the AGNS Western Branch are excited about the upcoming 2015 series of Creative Minds.Michael Tavares lead the first session at the gallery on January 25.
Tavares has spent the past 30 years as an Adaptive Reuse Restoration Artist with a particular focus on repurposing historic buildings for current uses without compromising the historic fabric and architectural design of the buildings. He’s worked on many different architectural styles and periods and, to date, has over 30 restoration/repurpose projects in his portfolio—including the MacKinnon Cann Inn, at 27 Willow Street in Yarmouth.
He spoke about the history of slate fireplace mantles and the art of restoring the faux finishes. He also talked about crown molded plaster ceilings, how they are made, their original purpose and how to restore them. People also viewed photos of creations he refers to as “Unintentional Art”.
Creative Minds is a free program, open to everyone, and proudly sponsored by Coastal Financial Credit Union.
January 9, 2015 – Friends support Bus Program
The Friends of the Yarmouth Art Gallery are offering a new program to bus students from their schools to visit the gallery! The Friends have earmarked $3000 to help students in the Tri Counties to visit the AGNS Western Branch and take part in the Canaccord Program. The program is free, and consists of school tours of the gallery plus a hands-on program while the students are there.
